Abstract This study aimed to verify technical potential of using waste from wood veneers and plywood as a raw material for the production of MDP. The variance analysis of the panels density was carried out. Physical-mechanical properties were evaluated by comparing them with the international standards and by analysis of variance. The averages were subjected to the analysis of covariance, at the level of 5% probability. Finally, Pearson’s correlation analysis between properties was performed. The panels produced with “log core” and “veneer clippings” residues showed equivalent averages for physical properties and higher for mechanical properties of internal bond and surface screw withdrawal, when compared the averages of panels produced with commercial particles. Panels produced with “plywood cutting” showed unsatisfactory mechanical properties. It’s concluded that the “log core” and “veneer clippings” residues show potential for use as a raw material in the composition of MDP.

O objetivo do trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da idade e da classe diamétrica nos níveis das tensões de crescimento longitudinal em árvores de Eucalyptus dunnii oriundas de plantio comercial. O material avaliado foi procedente da Empresa Procopiak Compensados e Embalagens S.A., localizada no município de Canoinhas, Santa Catarina. Os níveis de tensão de crescimento foram mensurados indiretamente pelo método do "CIRAD-Forêt". Os resultados indicaram que os níveis da deformação residual longitudinal (DRL) apresentaram tendência de aumento linear com a idade. O efeito da classe diamétrica evidenciou correlação negativa com a DRL aos 8 e 13 anos de idade.

This research aims at evaluating the age and diametric class effects on levels of longitudinal residual strain in trees of Eucalyptus dunnii originated from commercial plantation. The appraised material came from Procopiak Company-Plywood and Package, located in Canoinhas, State of Santa Catarina-Brazil. The growth stress levels were measured indirectly through the "CIRAD-Forêt" method. The results indicated that the levels of longitudinal residual strain (DRL) showed a tendency for linear increase with age. The diametric class effect gave negative correlation with DRL for 8 and 13- year old trees.

RESUMO Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com o objetivo de avaliar a influência dos seguintes parâmetros de processo de produção sobre as propriedades das chapas “OSB”: composição das chapas em camadas cruzadas com proporções face-miolo-face de 30-40-30 e 20-60-20 em relação à composição homogênea; e, quantidades de 3, 4,5 e 6,0% de resina fenol-formaldeído, com incorporação de 0,5 e 1,0% de emulsão de parafina. Os resultados demonstraram que a composição das chapas, com a relação 20-60-20, apresentou melhor balanço das propriedades de flexão estática entre os sentidos de ensaios paralelo e perpendicular ao plano da chapa. A quantidade de 6,0% de resina foi a que resultou em melhores propriedades físicomecânicas das chapas “OSB”. A produção de chapas “OSB” de Eucalyptus grandis, com 4,5 e 6,0% de resina fenol-formaldeído, superou as exigências mínimas de propriedades mecânicas das chapas “OSB” referendadas pela norma canadense CSA 0437-0 (1993).

ABSTRACT This paper was carried out aiming to evaluate the influence of the following processing variables on the properties of OSB: face to core layer ratios of 30-40-30 and 20-60-20 in relation to a single layer; phenol-formaldehyde resin content of 3, 4.5 and 6.0% and addition of 0.5 or 1.0% of wax sizing. The results showed that the boards composed of face to core layer ratios of 20-60-20, presented the better balance in static bending tests, both in the machine and cross-machine directions. The application of 4.5 and 6.0% of resin resulted in better physical and mechanical properties of the OSB. The OSB produced with Eucalyptus grandis, and 4.5 and 6.0% of phenol-formaldehyde resin were in compliance with values of the mechanical properties of the Canadian Standards CSA 0437-0 (1993).

ABSTRACT This work was developed aiming to evaluate the effects of strands orientation and veneer inclusion on the physical and mechanical properties of the boards. The boards were manufactured with density of 0,70 g/ cm3 and face to core ratio of 50:50, using phenol-formaldheyde resin. The values of MOE and MOR of the oriented strandboards were significactivelly high in comparison to no-oriented strandboards. The veneer inclusion in the non-oriented strandboards contributed to increase in MOE and MOR on the axial direction of the board and decrease on the cross direction. The veneer inclusion on the oriented strandboard did not contribute significactivelly to increase of MOE and MOR. The effects of strands orientation and veneer inclusion did not increase significativelly the water absorption. On the other hand, the veneer inclusion contributed to reducing of thickness sweeling.

RESUMO Este trabalho foi desenvolvido com objetivo de avaliar a influência da orientação das partículas “strand” e inclusão laminar sobre as propriedades físico-mecânicas das chapas. Foram fabricadas chapas com densidade de 0,70g/cm3 e composição face:miolo de 50:50, utilizando resina fenolformaldeído. Os valores de MOE e MOR das chapas com partículas orientadas foram significativamente superiores em comparação às chapas com partículas não-orientadas. A inclusão laminar em chapas com partículas não-orientadas contribuiu para o aumento nos valores de MOE e MOR na direção paralela ao plano da chapa e redução na direção perpendicular. Para as chapas com partículas orientadas, a inclusão laminar não contribuiu significativamente para o incremento nos valores de MOE e MOR. A orientação ou não das partículas e o reforço laminar não influenciaram nos valores de absorção de água. A inclusão laminar contribuiu para a redução nos valores de inchamento em espessura das chapas.

ABSTRACT This research aimed at studing the effects of panels density (0.65 and 0.80 g/cm3), face to core ratios (1:1:1 and 1:3:1) and resin content (4% and 6%) on the properties of OSB panels. It was concluded that the OSB panels present better quality when manufactured with density of 0.80 g/cm3, face-to-core ratio of 1:3:1, and 6% resin content.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar os efeitos da densidade (0,65 e 0,80 g/cm3), composição dos painéis (1:1:1 e 1:3:1) e teor de resina (4% e 6%) nas propriedades de painéis OSB. Foi concluído que os painéis OSB apresentam melhor qualidade quando manufaturados com densidade de 0,80 g/cm3, relação face/miolo de 1:3:1 e teor de resina de 6%.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como objetivo estudar os efeitos das espécies e adição de parafina nas propriedades de painéis OSB. Foi concluído que as espécies estudadas são homogêneas entre si e produzem painéis de qualidade semelhante, a adição de parafina melhora substancialmente a estabilidade dimensional dos painéis. Os painéis produzidos atenderam às especificações mínima da norma canadense CSA 0437.0.

ABSTRACT This work had the objective to study the species effects, and the wax addition in the OSB panels properties. The final conclusion was that the studied species are homogeneous among themselves and they produce similar quality panels. The produced panels attended to the minimum specifications of the CSA 0437.0 Canadian standard.
